Application:
Cell Phone TestingOmniTester has been involved in a large number of custom testing applications over the years. A good example of our engineering capability as it relates to these unique applications is the testing of cell phone flip assemblies. In addition to standard continuity and isolation testing, the Omni2501 also performs several other critical tests. These include a 4-wire measurement to insure that a trace in a flex circuit is within the narrow resistance range tolerated by the phone, the test of a vibrator motor to assure proper operation, and a test to insure the proper installation of a magnet in the assembly. Finally, an acoustical measurement is made using an audio analyzer under control of the Omni2501 to assure that a speaker in the assembly meets critical performance characteristics.
All of this testing is performed in 12 seconds in order to meet the heavy throughput
requirements of the production line. This effort is complicated by the need
to include the assembly load and unload time in and out of the test fixture
in throughput calculations - a difficult task when the complexity of the mating
requirements is considered. To meet this need, OmniTester designed a fixture
that includes a microphone acoustical chamber, a positioning mechanism and mating
surface for a flex circuit with a 20 mil traces on a 20 mil pitch, and various
other sensing devices. The fixture has met the throughput requirements and the
reliability demands of constant use when earlier designs by others failed.
