Application: Device Activation

External energization capability, also referred to EE or stimulus, is an option that can be added to Series 2500 test systems. This feature allows the tester to apply voltage from an external power supply to the product being tested under program control.

A typical use for this capability is the actuation of relays in the product. Normally a relay test would follow this simple sequence:

• A resistance measurement on the relay coil assures that it’s within specification before applying the stimulus.
  
  
• The status of the relay contacts is checked using a resistance measurement.
  
  
• Stimulus is applied to the coil to actuate the relay.
  
  
• The activated state of the relay is checked using a resistance measurement.
  
  
• The stimulus is removed from the relay.
  
  
• The contacts are checked using a resistance measurement to assure that the relay returned to its original condition.
  

Other external energization applications include lighting LED’s for visual confirmation, activating alarms, turning on fans etc.
